Librarian (Kingston, Jamaica) - National Works Agency

The National Works Agency is seeking suitably qualified individuals to fill the above mentioned position of Librarian (Level 5).
Minimum Requirements:

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Library Science or equivalent from a recognized tertiary institution
  • A minimum of three (3) years work experience in Librarianship and Information Management


Skills Requirements:
  • Information management
  • Knowledge of computer applications required to create webpages, process and retrieve information
  • Excellent research skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Reports to: Manager - Information Resources

Summary of Duties
  • Identify information needs, develop implement the requisite facilities to acquire information; materials to support policy formulation, decision making and problem solving
  • Process information materials using standard rules and established procedures and practices
  • Conduct adequate research to provide information where available
  • Initiate and develop systems and control for the retrieval, circulation, routing and general dissemination of information materials
  • Supervise the duplication of documents in keeping with intellectual property/copyright laws
  • Promote the facilities and services of the library through exhibitions/displays, publications and other promotional activities.

LIBRARIAN (Kingston, Jamaica) - Jamaica Information Service

The Jamaica Information Service (JIS), an executive agency, invites applications from suitably qualified professionals for the following position:

Librarian

Job Scope:

The Librarian reports directly to the Manager, Research and Publications Department and provides librarian and research services to meet the diverse needs of the JIS staff and members of the public with respect to the Government of Jamaica and the nation itself. The incumbent ensures that materials are current and accessible, and available to library users when required.

Core Functions:
  • Works closely with Department Manager to facilitate the strategic development of the Library.
  • Establishes and implements library and information, and collections management policies and procedures
  • Coordinates and managesconvenient, accessible library and information services
  • Maintains CDS-ISIS database and the JIS News and current affairs files
  • Responds to enquiries and assists library users (internal and external) in accessing resources
  • Prepares and circulates e-newsletters and bulletins
  • Ensures an accurate inventory of resources
  • Works with other Departments and professional bodies to enhance services and develop initiatives
  • Promotes the use of Library


Qualifications and Experience:
  • Degree in Library and Information Studies or other related discipline 
  • Knowledge of
    • Current practices, new technologies and trends in bibliographic control
    • Current affairs, the history of Jamaica and the English-speaking Caribbean
    • Access to Information Act and Regulations
    • Government of Jamaica Record and Information Policy
  • Ability to understand and respond appropriately to the information agency and to research enquiries and work with tight deadlines
  • Proficient in the use of ICT and CDS-ISIS database
  • Exercise self-discipline and time management in carrying out main duties/responsibilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  •  Good oral and written communication skills
